July 15, 1946 - May 4, 2012
Our beloved Sister and Friend, Carol Quick Porter, passed away Friday, May 4, 2012. Her courage, dignity and grace were an inspiration to all. Carol was a graduate of Salem College where she was a Salem Scholar, Oslo Scholar and editor of the newspaper. Carol worked at the UNC Sheps Center for decades as a skilled and creative analyst. She taught generations of junior investigators and fellows how to think about research and data in logical and yet creative ways, including the Robert Wood Johnson and the INCLEN fellows. More importantly, she was a friend and colleague to all. Her work and friendship touched people not just in North Carolina but throughout the world through her teaching and ongoing mentoring. Carol loved outdoor adventure and enjoyed biking, hiking, skiing, and kayaking around the country and abroad with many wonderful friends. She was an avid reader and part of her joy of reading came from sharing books with others, as part of the book clubs to which she belonged, or just as friend whose likes she well knew. Carol was predeceased by her parents Bill and Dorothy Quick and her brother John Quick. She is survived by her sisters Eleanor Quick, Raleigh, NC; Catherine Vennik and husband Ed, Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law Blair Hughes and husband John, Raleigh, NC; nephew Bryan Quick, and family Port Charlotte, FL; and a legion of friends around the world. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, 314 Great Ridge Parkway, Chapel Hill, NC. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Carol's name to one of her favorite charities: Doctors without Borders of NY, NY; the North Carolina Nature Conservancy of Durham, NC; or Salem College of Winston-Salem, NC.
